Ducati 848 servicing
2008 to 2013 · 849cc Testastretta Evoluzione V-twin · Greenwich, London
For the Ducati 848, 848 EVO, EVO Corse SE and the black Dark versions (2008 to 2013), Ray Petty Meccanica provides servicing and repairs at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. Ducati called the 848 its best-selling middleweight superbike, and RPM handles everything from its belt and Desmo services to the traction control and quickshifter on the Corse SE.
About the 848
The 848 replaced the 749 for 2008 as the middleweight of the 1098 family, with a trellis frame and single-sided swingarm like the bigger bike's. Its 849cc Testastretta Evoluzione V-twin (94 x 61.2mm) is liquid-cooled with four desmodromic valves per cylinder and, unusually for a Ducati superbike of the time, a wet clutch rather than a dry one. The 848 EVO arrived for 2011 with new cylinder heads, pistons, camshafts and throttle bodies, 13.2:1 compression, Brembo Monobloc calipers and a steering damper. The EVO Corse SE of 2012 and 2013 added Ducati Traction Control, the DQS quickshifter, the DDA data logger, an Öhlins shock and 330mm front discs. Cheaper all-black Dark versions were also sold. The 899 Panigale replaced it.
Servicing your 848
The 848 has toothed cam belts, so they are replaced on age as well as mileage, and its Desmo valve service follows Ducati's schedule for the model; RPM will tell you exactly what's due. The weak points BikeSocial lists are mostly electrical or at the rear wheel: the regulator/rectifier can fail (early bikes were recalled to fit a heat shield), early dashboards can mist up and let water in, and the eccentric chain adjuster in the single-sided swingarm can seize, especially if the hub pinch bolts have been over-tightened. The rear shock is also hard to rebuild. On the EVO Corse SE, RPM checks the traction control and quickshifter with the latest Ducati diagnostic software. Buying an 848? RPM will look at it for you first.
