Ray Petty Meccanica won Best in Class at the 2020 Salon Privé Concours d'Elegance at Blenheim Palace with a 1974 Ducati 750SS it had restored, the first concours the workshop had ever entered. The judges commented on the bike's originality.
The restoration took six months. It included a top-end rebuild and sourcing some of the hardest-to-find parts imaginable, and finished with more than 100 hours of detailing.
To say we're delighted would be an understatement. I grew up with these motorcycles so I know exactly how they should look. For the judges to comment on those small details makes me and my team incredibly proud to be able to present such a fantastic machine.
Ray PettyThe Ducati 750 Super Sport is one of the most sought-after Ducatis ever made. It was the road-going follow-up to the bike Paul Smart rode to victory in the 1972 Imola 200, with a desmodromic, bevel-drive 750cc V-twin. The 1974 bikes, with their green-painted frames, are the rarest: only 401 were built, and one is in the Ducati museum in Bologna.
That rarity is why originality matters so much at concours level, and why the judges' comments meant so much to Ray and the team.
