Ducati 1098 servicing
2007 to 2009 · 1,099cc Testastretta Evoluzione V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica carries out servicing and repairs on the Ducati 1098, 1098 S, Tricolore and 1098 R (2007 to 2009) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 1098 has clear valve service intervals and a short list of well-known faults, and RPM checks for those faults as it works through the bike.
About the 1098
The 1098 replaced the 999 for 2007 and brought back the single-sided swingarm the 999 had dropped, with twin silencers under the seat. Its 1,099cc Testastretta Evoluzione V-twin (104 x 64.7mm) is liquid-cooled with four desmodromic valves per cylinder and a dry clutch, in a stiffer trellis frame with Brembo Monobloc front calipers. The 1098 S added Öhlins suspension, lighter wheels and data logging as standard. The Tricolore, built for 2007 only, was an S in red, white and green with a gold frame and wheels and a Termignoni race exhaust kit with its own ECU. The 2008 1098 R homologation bike used a 1,198cc engine with sand-cast heads and crankcases, titanium rods and eight-level traction control.
Servicing your 1098
The 1098 is due a service every year or 7,500 miles, and its valve clearances are checked at every 7,500-mile interval regardless of the bike's age. Its cam belts are replaced by age as well as mileage, but guides quote different belt intervals because Ducati extended them after launch, so RPM works to the schedule that now applies to your bike. The known faults are well documented: the fuel pump relay is weak, the fuel tank breather can block and starve the engine, the clutch slave cylinder can leak, and early swingarms collect water that rusts the lower shock mount. The rear hub and eccentric adjuster also benefit from a strip and regrease every few years. RPM uses genuine Ducati and OEM parts throughout.
