Ducati 749 servicing
2003 to 2007 · 748cc Testastretta V-twin · Greenwich, London
Owners of the Ducati 749, 749 S, 749 R and 749 Dark (2003 to 2007) can have them serviced and repaired by Ray Petty Meccanica at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The weak spots on these bikes are mostly electrical, so RPM pairs the belt and Desmo work with a proper check of the wiring, relays and coils.
About the 749
The 749 was the middleweight partner to the 999, styled by Pierre Terblanche and launched in 2003 to replace the 748. Its engine is a smaller version of the 999's Testastretta: 748cc from a 90 x 58.8mm bore and stroke, liquid-cooled, with belt-driven double overhead cams and four desmodromic valves per cylinder. The 749 R homologation model used a 749cc version (94 x 54mm) with bigger valves, plus Öhlins suspension. The 749 S added chassis adjustment, with two rake settings (23.5° or 24.5°), five footrest positions and a tank, seat and tail unit that moves between three positions. The 749 Dark was the cheapest version, with lower-spec suspension. Bikes from 2005 have more power and single fairing scoops instead of twin ones.
Servicing your 749
BikeSocial's guide gives the 749's cam belt change as every two years or 12,000 miles, and Ducati's major service on these bikes falls at the same 12,000 miles or 24 months, with minor services every 6,000 miles or 12 months. In Visordown's survey of 749 and 999 owners, more than half reported no problems at all, and the faults that did come up were mostly electrical. The wiring harness behind the battery box corrodes badly, and the front coil sits in spray from the front wheel and can fail. Rust flaking from inside the fuel tank can also clog the filter and leave the bike feeling flat. RPM uses the latest Ducati diagnostic software to trace faults like these.
