Ducati SuperSport 939 servicing

2017 to 2020 · 937cc Testastretta 11° liquid-cooled V-twin · Greenwich, London

Black Ducati Testastretta 11° engine cover and exhaust header

Ray Petty Meccanica, the independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London, services and repairs the 2017 to 2020 Ducati SuperSport and SuperSport S, the bikes now known as the SuperSport 939. Its long service intervals mean the Desmo service and belt change come round less often, so RPM checks the history for them and for the 2018 recall work.

About the SuperSport 939

Ducati revived the SuperSport name for 2017 with a sports bike built for the road rather than the track, sold as the SuperSport and SuperSport S. It uses the 937cc Testastretta 11° V-twin from the Hypermotard 939, liquid-cooled with four valves per cylinder, retuned for more low-down power and fitted with longer final drive gearing. The steel trellis frame bolts to both cylinder heads and uses the engine as a load-bearing part. Standard equipment included Bosch 9MP ABS, Ducati Traction Control with eight levels, Sport, Touring and Urban riding modes and a height-adjustable screen. The S added fully adjustable Öhlins suspension and the Ducati Quick Shift up and down shifter, which was an accessory on the standard bike.

Servicing your SuperSport 939

Ducati set the service interval at 15,000 km (9,000 miles) or 12 months, with the valve clearance check every 30,000 km (18,000 miles). The cam belts are not on the old two-year cycle: Bennetts notes they are replaced as part of the Desmo service, so a used bike's history should show when that was last done. Ducati recalled the SuperSport in 2018 over interference between the gear lever and its pivot pin, and the S had a separate recall for a fuel tank or airbox drain tube problem, so check both were carried out. RPM reads the ABS, traction control and engine systems with the latest Ducati diagnostic software, and will inspect a used one for you before you buy.
