Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Paul Smart 1000 LE and the SportClassic Sport 1000, Sport 1000 S and Biposto (2006 to 2009) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. Under the retro styling is the belt-driven 1000 DS engine, and RPM handles its belt changes and Desmo services along with the dry clutch on the early bikes.

About the Sport 1000 and Paul Smart 1000 LE

Pierre Terblanche's SportClassic range arrived in 2006, and these are its café racers. The Paul Smart 1000 LE, a 2006-only run of 2,000, marks Paul Smart's win at the 1972 Imola 200, with a silver fairing and fully adjustable Öhlins fork and shock. The Sport 1000 was the unfaired single-seater, with a Marzocchi upside-down fork and a single Sachs shock mounted on the left. For 2007 Ducati added the two-seat Sport 1000 Biposto and the half-faired Sport 1000 S, both with twin rear shocks and a wet clutch, and the Sport 1000 stayed in the range until 2009. All of them use the 992cc air-cooled, two-valve Dual Spark engine from the 1000 DS, with fuel injection and spoked wheels.

Servicing your Sport 1000 or Paul Smart

The DS engine drives its single overhead cams with toothed belts, so the belts need renewing by age as well as mileage, and the Desmo service sets eight valve clearances, an opening and a closing one for each of the four valves. Ducati's schedule for the SportClassic gives the intervals, and RPM will tell you which jobs your bike is due. The Paul Smart and the 2006 Sport 1000 have a dry clutch, while the later Biposto and S have a wet one, so the clutch work is different between them. The spoked wheels add spoke and rim checks to the list. With only 2,000 Paul Smarts made, it makes sense to have RPM look one over before you buy.
