Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Monster 1000, 1000 S and S2R 1000 (2003 to 2008) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. These were the biggest air-cooled Monsters of their day, and RPM keeps their belt-driven Dual Spark engines on schedule for cam belts and Desmo valve services.

About the Monster 1000 and S2R 1000

The Monster 1000 and 1000 S replaced the M900 for 2003. Their 992cc air-cooled engine was Ducati's new Dual Spark unit, with two plugs per cylinder, a bigger bore and longer stroke than the 904cc motor, and a six-speed gearbox in place of five. The same engine went into the Multistrada 1000DS and the SuperSport 1000DS. The 1000 S had a fully adjustable 43mm Showa fork, an adjustable Sachs shock, a nose fairing and carbon fibre panels. Both were dropped during 2005. The S2R 1000 followed for 2006 with the same engine and a claimed 84hp, a single-sided swingarm, stacked exhausts, a fully adjustable Showa fork and a dry clutch, and it stayed in the range until 2008.

Servicing your Monster 1000 or S2R 1000

The Dual Spark engine has two valves per cylinder and toothed cam belts, and MCN gives the belt change for the Monster 1000 as every two years or 12,000 miles. Age matters as much as distance; our cam belt guide explains why. The Desmo service checks and sets the opening and closing valve clearances, following Ducati's schedule for the model. With two plugs per cylinder there are four spark plugs to replace. The S2R 1000 kept a dry clutch, so its plates and hydraulics are worth checking at each service. MCN also warns the battery can go flat quickly if the bike is laid up without a trickle charger. We use the latest Ducati diagnostic software and call you before doing any extra work.
