Ducati SuperSport 1000 DS, 800 and 620 servicing
2003 to 2006 · 992cc, 803cc and 618cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the 2003 to 2006 Ducati SuperSport range, the 1000 DS, 800 and 620 often called the 1000SS, 800SS and 620SS, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. They are the last of the air-cooled, belt-driven SS line, and RPM keeps their belts and valve clearances in order.
About the SuperSport 1000 DS, 800 and 620
For 2003 Ducati replaced the 750 and 900 SS with three new fuel-injected, air-cooled models. The flagship SuperSport 1000 DS had a new 992cc Dual Spark engine with two plugs per cylinder, camshafts running in plain bearings, beryllium-bronze valve seats and exhaust ports 40 percent shorter than before, in a chassis with a fully adjustable 43mm Showa fork and an Öhlins shock. The 803cc 800 replaced the old 750 engine, gained a six-speed gearbox and came as the SuperSport 800 or the cheaper 800 Sport. The 620 Sport was the short-lived entry model, offered with a full or half fairing. A version of the DS engine also powers the Multistrada 1000 DS, and it was later used in the SportClassic range.
Servicing your SuperSport 1000 DS, 800 or 620
Like the 900SS before them, these two-valve engines drive their cams with toothed belts, so the belts are renewed on age as well as mileage, and the Desmo service checks and resets the opening and closing clearance on every valve. The intervals follow Ducati's schedule for each model, and RPM will tell you which jobs are due. The 1000 DS has a hydraulically operated dry clutch, which is a wear item to check at each service. If you are buying a 1000 DS, make sure the red master key comes with it: Bennetts notes that without it, blank keys cannot be programmed to the immobiliser. RPM will look over a bike before you buy it, so you know what you are taking on.
