Ducati GT1000 servicing
2006 to 2010 · 992cc air-cooled two-valve Dual Spark V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati GT1000 and GT1000 Touring (2006 to 2010) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. It is a simple, belt-driven air-cooled twin on wire wheels with tubed tyres, and RPM covers everything from the belts and valve clearances to the wheels and brakes.
About the GT1000
The GT1000 was the touring member of the SportClassic family, launched in 2006 and built until 2010, with styling taken from the 1971 750 GT, the first Ducati V-twin sold to the public. It has the same 992cc air-cooled, two-valve Dual Spark engine as the Sport 1000, here with a wet clutch, in a trellis frame with a non-adjustable 43mm Marzocchi upside-down fork and twin rear shocks adjustable for preload. The wire wheels have chromed steel rims laced to aluminium hubs and run tube-type tyres. It has a proper handlebar and a twin seat, and the GT1000 Touring added a screen, chrome mudguards and a luggage rack.
Servicing your GT1000
Like the other SportClassics, the GT1000 runs its cams on toothed belts that are changed on age as well as mileage, and its Desmo service covers four valves, each with an opening and a closing clearance. How often those jobs come round depends on Ducati's schedule for the GT1000, and RPM will tell you where your bike stands. Because the wheels take tubed tyres, a puncture means taking the wheel out and fitting a new tube rather than plugging the tyre, and the spokes need checking too. Road testers found the clutch heavy from new. Ray Petty and his team fit genuine Ducati and OEM parts, and call you to agree any extra work before it is done.
