Ducati Multistrada 1000DS, 1100 and 620 servicing
2003 to 2009 · 992cc, 618cc and 1,078cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the first-generation Ducati Multistrada, from the 2003 1000DS to the 620 and the 1100 that ran until 2009, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. These are air-cooled, two-valve bikes with toothed cam belts, and we look after the belts, the Desmo valve clearances and, on the 1000DS, the dry clutch.
About the Multistrada 1000DS, 1100 and 620
The Multistrada went on sale in 2003 as the 1000DS, pairing an upright riding position with fully adjustable suspension and twin 320 mm front discs. Its 992cc air-cooled Desmo twin, shared with the Monster and SuperSport, has two valves per cylinder and dual spark ignition (the DS in the name) and drives through a dry clutch. A single-sided swingarm and a split fairing, with the lower half fixed to the frame, set its look. The 1000S DS of 2005 added Öhlins suspension. The 620 of the same year used the Monster 620 engine with a wet slipper clutch, a double-sided swingarm and a 15-litre tank. In 2007 the 1100 and 1100 S took over, with a 1,078cc engine and a wet clutch.
Servicing your Multistrada 1000DS, 1100 or 620
Every model here has a two-valve Desmo head, so a valve service means measuring and setting both the opening and the closing clearance on each valve. The cams are driven by toothed belts, which are renewed on age as well as mileage: a Multistrada that has covered few miles but sat for years still needs fresh belts. The 1000DS keeps Ducati's dry clutch, while the 620 and 1100 run wet clutches in oil, which Ducati described as quieter and more robust. Ducati also gave the 1100 a revised maintenance plan, so what is due depends on which model you have. We fit genuine Ducati parts and tell you exactly what your bike needs before we start.
