Ducati Monster S4, S4R and S4RS servicing
2001 to 2008 · 916cc to 998cc liquid-cooled four-valve Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Monster S4, S4R and S4RS, the superbike-engined Monsters of 2001 to 2008, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. RPM handles the cam belts, Desmo valve services and dry clutch work these four-valve twins need, and calls the owner before doing anything that wasn't agreed.
About the Monster S4, S4R and S4RS
The S4 of 2001 was the first liquid-cooled Monster, with a retuned 916cc four-valve Desmoquattro from the 916 Superbike in the Monster chassis, and a Fogarty replica followed in 2002. The S4R arrived in 2003 with the 996 engine, a single-sided swingarm and twin stacked high-level exhausts. In 2006 the S4RS took the 998cc Testastretta from the 999 and added Öhlins suspension at both ends, radial Brembo calipers and Marchesini wheels, for a claimed 130bhp. For 2007 the S4R also moved to the Testastretta engine, keeping a fully adjustable Showa fork and Sachs shock instead of Öhlins. Ducati built an S4RS Tricolore in 2008 and dropped the liquid-cooled Monsters at the end of that year.
Servicing your S4, S4R or S4RS
All of these engines are liquid-cooled four-valve Desmo twins with toothed cam belts, so the belts are due by age as well as mileage; see our cam belt guide. Bennetts quotes Ducati's schedule for the S4RS as a valve clearance check every 7,500 miles and new belts at 15,000 miles, and recommends new belts every two years. They have a dry clutch, and Bennetts notes the clutch slave cylinder often leaks. The radiator and oil cooler sit where stones from the front wheel can dent them, and the S4RS's Brembo calipers can suffer sticking pistons. We use genuine Ducati and OEM parts, and ring you before any work beyond what you asked for.
