Ducati Monster 1100 servicing

2009 to 2013 · 1,078cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twin · Greenwich, London

Carbon fibre exhaust silencer on a Ducati

Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Monster 1100, 1100 S and 1100 EVO, built from 2009 to 2013, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 1100 is the largest of the air-cooled two-valve Monsters, and RPM looks after its cam belts, valve clearances and, on the EVO, the ABS and traction control electronics.

About the Monster 1100

The Monster 1100 and 1100 S arrived for 2009, taking over from the S2R 1000 with the new-generation Monster chassis plus a single-sided swingarm. The 1,078cc air-cooled two-valve engine drove through a dry clutch and breathed out through exhausts under the seat, and the S added Öhlins suspension. For 2011 the 1100 EVO replaced both. Revised heads, higher compression and a lighter flywheel lifted claimed power to 100hp, the dry clutch gave way to a wet slipper clutch, and a new 2-1-2 exhaust moved to the right-hand side. ABS and Ducati Traction Control were standard, making it the first two-valve Ducati with traction control. A 20th Anniversary EVO followed in 2013, its last year before the Monster 1200 replaced it.

Servicing your Monster 1100

Every 1100 has toothed cam belts and two valves per cylinder, so the belts are replaced on age as well as mileage and the Desmo service checks and sets the valve clearances; our cam belt guide covers the belts. Ducati's published figure for the 1100 EVO puts both the maintenance service and the valve clearance check at 12,000 km (7,500 miles). On the 2009 and 2010 bikes the dry clutch is worth inspecting at every service. The EVO's ABS and traction control need Ducati's diagnostic software for fault-finding, and we use the latest version. When your bike comes in, we work through it from one end to the other and call you before any extra work.
