Ducati Monster 600, 750 and 900 servicing
1993 to 2002 · 583cc to 904cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the original Ducati Monster, the M600, M750 and M900 built from 1993 to 2002, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. Ray and his team have worked on Ducatis for 35 years and look after these belt-driven twins from routine Desmo services and cam belts through to full restoration.
About the Monster 600, 750 and 900
Ducati showed the Monster 900 at the Cologne show in the autumn of 1992 and started building it on 5 March 1993. The idea was simple: the 904cc air-cooled two-valve engine from the 900SS in a steel trellis frame from the 888 Superbike, with little more than a tank and seat on top. The M600 followed in 1994 with a 583cc engine and a single front disc, and the M750 arrived in 1996 with the 750SS engine. The Dark, the chrome-tanked Cromo and the better-equipped M900 S came in the late 1990s. For 2000 the M900 gained fuel injection and a digital dash, the 750 was injected soon after, and by 2003 the 620, 800 and 1000 had replaced the lot.
Servicing your Monster 600, 750 or 900
Every one of these engines drives its camshafts with toothed belts, and the belts age whether or not the bike is ridden, so they are replaced on time as well as mileage. Our cam belt guide covers the intervals. The Desmo service checks and sets both the opening and closing valve clearances, following Ducati's schedule for the model. Carburettor bikes can be reluctant to start after a lay-up because fuel evaporates from the float bowls. The M900 has a dry clutch, the 600 and 750 wet ones. Electrics, the regulator in particular, give more trouble than the engines. We work through the bike from one end to the other and call you to agree any extra work first.
