Ducati Monster 620 and 695 servicing
2002 to 2008 · 618cc and 695cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica looks after the Ducati Monster 620 i.e., 620 Dark and 695 at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London, from oil changes and Desmo services to fault-finding and repairs. Both bikes have belt-driven two-valve engines, and RPM replaces the cam belts on age as well as mileage, which matters on any bike that spends long spells unused.
About the Monster 620 and 695
The Monster 620 i.e. replaced the M600 for 2002, adding Marelli fuel injection and a 3mm longer stroke that took capacity to 618cc. It sat in a stiffer trellis frame derived from the S4's. Ducati sold the standard bike with twin front discs, the single-disc Dark and, until the end of 2003, the 620 S with an aluminium swingarm and headlight cowl. Early bikes had five gears; six-speed versions followed, along with Ducati's lighter APTC wet clutch. In 2006 the 695 replaced the 620, with bigger bores and a shorter stroke giving 695cc and a claimed 73bhp, in a chassis that was otherwise largely unchanged. It stayed in the range until the 696 arrived in 2008.
Servicing your Monster 620 or 695
Both engines are air-cooled two-valve Desmo twins with toothed cam belts, so the belts are replaced by age as well as mileage. Our cam belt guide explains why. The oil and filter changes and the Desmo service, which checks and sets the opening and closing valve clearances, follow Ducati's schedule for the model, and we'll tell you what's due. On Monsters of this age the electrics and charging system are the usual trouble spots, more often than the engine, so they're worth checking at every service. If you're thinking of buying one, we'll look it over for you before you commit.
