At its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London, Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Monster 800, 800 S and S2R 800, built from 2003 to 2008. These belt-driven 803cc Monsters need their cam belts and Desmo service done on time, and RPM handles both with genuine Ducati parts.

About the Monster 800 and S2R 800

The Monster 800 replaced the 750 for 2003. Its 803cc air-cooled two-valve engine was fuel injected, with six gears and a lighter clutch than the old 750's, and the 800 S added an aluminium swingarm, a small nose fairing and carbon fibre panels. For 2005 Ducati trimmed the Monster range and the S2R 800 took over: the same 803cc engine, now with a claimed 77bhp, in a trellis frame with the single-sided swingarm and high-level exhaust from the S4R. Testers at the time called it either a specced-up 800 or a budget S4R. It stayed on sale until 2008, when the 696 became the smaller Monster.

Servicing your Monster 800 or S2R 800

Both bikes use Ducati's air-cooled two-valve Desmo engine with toothed cam belts, so the belts are replaced by age as well as mileage, whatever the odometer says. Our cam belt guide explains the intervals. The Desmo service checks and sets the opening and closing valve clearances on Ducati's schedule for the model, with oil, filters, brake fluid and the chain dealt with alongside. The S2R 800 has Ducati's lighter APTC clutch, which the 1000cc S2R never got. Reviews of both bikes agree that electrics are more likely to give trouble than the engine, so charging and connectors are worth checking every time. We use genuine Ducati and OEM parts and fit DID chains.
