Ducati Monster 821 servicing
2014 to 2020 · 821cc Testastretta 11° liquid-cooled V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Monster 821, including the Dark, Stripe and Stealth, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 821's Testastretta 11° engine has long valve service intervals but still has cam belts that age, and RPM keeps track of both, along with the bike's ABS, traction control and riding modes.
About the Monster 821
Ducati unveiled the Monster 821 in May 2014 as a smaller partner to the Monster 1200, and with it the mid-size Monster moved to liquid cooling. Its 821cc Testastretta 11° came from the Hypermotard, with a claimed 112hp, ride-by-wire, three riding modes, three-level ABS and eight-level traction control. The Dark was the cheaper version, and the Stripe of 2015 added adjustable forks. The 2018 update, shown at EICMA in November 2017, brought a restyled tank and tail, a colour TFT dash with a fuel gauge, Euro 4 compliance and a claimed 109hp, and it was ready for Ducati's up and down quickshifter. The 2019 Stealth came with the quickshifter fitted, plus a fly screen and adjustable forks.
Servicing your Monster 821
The Testastretta 11° has four valves per cylinder and toothed cam belts. Bennetts gives the 821's Desmo valve clearance check as every 18,000 miles (30,000 km), with a minor service every 9,000 miles, the oil and filter changed every year, and the cam belts replaced every five years whatever the mileage. Our cam belt guide explains why age matters. The valve service is the big job, so it pays to know when it was last done. The ABS, traction control and riding modes are electronic, and we use the latest Ducati diagnostic software on them. Bikes before 2018 can only take aftermarket quickshifters, so any fitted one should have been installed properly.
