Ducati Monster 796 servicing
2010 to 2014 · 803cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs every Ducati Monster 796, with or without ABS, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 796's big two-yearly job is the cam belt and valve clearance service, and RPM does it with genuine Ducati parts and the latest Ducati diagnostic software.
About the Monster 796
Ducati revealed the Monster 796 in April 2010 to sit between the 696 and the 1100. It used the all-new 803cc air-cooled two-valve engine that had appeared months earlier in the Hypermotard 796, with a wet slipper clutch rather than a dry one. Unlike the 696 it had a single-sided swingarm, with the exhausts tucked under the seat. ABS was optional on early bikes and standard on later ones, and an ABS bike has a smaller tank: 13.5 litres against 15. A 20th Anniversary edition in red with a bronze frame and gold brake calipers came for 2013. The 796 left the range in 2014, when the liquid-cooled 821 took over the middle of the Monster line-up.
Servicing your Monster 796
Bennetts gives the 796's service interval as 7,500 miles, with the Desmo valve clearances checked at every one, and the toothed cam belts replaced every two years or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. That makes the two-yearly belt and valve service the big one, and it is worth doing on time even on a bike that has covered few miles; our cam belt guide explains why. Check the single-sided swingarm's rear hub, which can seize, and its pinch bolts, which are easily over-tightened. Bennetts' advice is to buy on service history rather than mileage. If you're looking at one, we'll go over it before you buy.
