Ducati Monster 797 servicing
2017 to 2020 · 803cc air-cooled Desmodue V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Monster 797 and 797+ (2017 to 2020) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 797 was the last air-cooled Monster, and its two-valve Desmodue engine needs regular valve checks and on-time cam belts, which RPM does with genuine Ducati and OEM parts.
About the Monster 797
Shown at EICMA in November 2016 and on sale for 2017, the Monster 797 brought back an air-cooled entry-level Monster. Its 803cc Desmodue engine made a claimed 75hp and drove through a cable-operated APTC wet clutch and a six-speed gearbox. The chassis used a steel trellis frame with a cast aluminium twin-sided swingarm, a non-adjustable 43mm Kayaba fork, a Sachs shock and radial Brembo M4.32 monobloc calipers on 320mm discs, and Bosch ABS was standard. The 797+ added a fly screen and pillion seat cover, and an A2-licence version was offered. Ducati dropped the 797 when Euro 5 rules arrived in 2021.
Servicing your Monster 797
Ducati's schedule for the 797 puts the service at 12,000 km (7,500 miles) or 12 months, and the Desmo valve clearance check at 12,000 km. MCN gives 15,000 miles for the toothed cam belts, and they also need replacing by age, so a 797 that rarely leaves the garage still needs them on time; our cam belt guide explains. Oil, filters, brake fluid, the chain and sprockets make up the rest of the routine, and we fit DID chains. The ABS and engine management are checked with the latest Ducati diagnostic software. If you're buying a used 797, we'll look it over first.
