About the Monster 696
Ducati revealed the Monster 696 in November 2007 and it reached dealers in April 2008, starting a new generation of Monster. Its 696cc air-cooled two-valve engine kept the 695's bore and stroke but had new cylinder heads similar to those on the 1100 two-valve engine, lifting claimed power to 80hp. The chassis was new too: a trellis frame with larger tubes, an aluminium rear subframe, a double-sided aluminium swingarm, a 43mm Showa fork, radial Brembo calipers on 320mm discs and a digital dash ready for Ducati's data analyser. The 696+ added a small fly screen and seat cowl, and a 20th Anniversary edition with a bronze frame arrived for 2013.
Servicing your Monster 696
The 696 has two valves per cylinder and toothed cam belts, so its routine is oil and filters, the Desmo valve clearance service and new belts, with the belts replaced on age as well as mileage. Our cam belt guide gives the detail. Ducati's schedule for the model sets the intervals, and we'll tell you what's due. The light APTC wet clutch is hydraulically operated, so its fluid needs attention along with the brakes. MCN's reviewers and owners do report electrical faults and corrosion around the engine, so connections and charging are worth checking at each service. If you're looking at a used 696, we'll check it over before you buy.
