Ducati Hypermotard 821 and Hyperstrada servicing
2013 to 2015 · 821cc Testastretta 11° liquid-cooled V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Hypermotard 821, 821 SP and Hyperstrada 821 (2013 to 2015) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. These were the first liquid-cooled Hypermotards, and RPM handles their 30,000 km Desmo services, cam belts and ABS and traction control checks.
About the Hypermotard 821
Unveiled in November 2012 and sold from 2013 to 2015, the 821 moved the Hypermotard to a liquid-cooled engine for the first time. The 821cc Testastretta 11° twin has four desmodromic valves per cylinder and a claimed 110hp, with ride-by-wire, three riding modes, three-level ABS and eight-level traction control as standard. It has a wet APTC slipper clutch and a tubular steel trellis frame. The SP adds longer-travel Marzocchi forks, an Öhlins shock, forged Marchesini wheels and carbon parts. The Hyperstrada is the touring version, with a touring screen, 50 litres of side luggage, two 12V sockets and Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres.
Servicing your Hypermotard 821
Ducati set the 821's valve clearance check at 30,000 km, a long step on from the air-cooled Hypermotards, but the cam belts are still replaced on age as well as mileage, so a lightly used 821 can need belts before it needs a Desmo service. With four valves per cylinder there are eight opening and eight closing clearances to measure and shim. RPM also checks the coolant, the radiator and its twin electric fans, and reads the ABS and traction control with up-to-date Ducati diagnostic software. A Hyperstrada that has carried luggage and a pillion gets a close look at its chain, wheel bearings and brakes too. RPM calls you to agree any extra work before it starts.
