Ducati Hypermotard 1100 servicing
2007 to 2012 · 1,078cc air-cooled two-valve Desmodue V-twin · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati Hypermotard 1100, 1100 S, EVO and EVO SP (2007 to 2012) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The big air-cooled Hypermotard runs its cams on rubber belts, and RPM's Desmo services cover the belts, the valve clearances and the rest of the bike in one visit.
About the Hypermotard 1100
Ducati showed the Hypermotard as a concept at EICMA in November 2005, where it won Best of Show, and the production 1100 went on sale for 2007. It uses the 1,078cc air-cooled Desmodue V-twin with two desmodromic valves per cylinder, in a tubular steel trellis frame, and the 1100 and 1100 S have a hydraulically operated dry clutch. The 1100 S added an Öhlins rear shock, Brembo Monobloc calipers, DLC-coated fork sliders and forged Marchesini wheels. For 2010 the EVO and EVO SP brought a reworked, lighter engine with a claimed 95hp and a much bigger oil cooler. The EVO SP has longer-travel Marzocchi forks, an Öhlins shock and 30mm more ground clearance. The liquid-cooled 821 replaced it for 2013.
Servicing your Hypermotard 1100
The Desmodue engine drives its overhead cams with toothed rubber belts, which are replaced on age as well as mileage, so a low-mileage Hypermotard that has stood for a few years can still be due a pair. The EVO has 12,000 km service intervals, and a Desmo service means measuring and setting both the opening and closing clearance on each valve, and fitting and tensioning new belts when they're due. RPM also looks at the oil cooler and its lines, the hydraulic clutch, the brakes and the fuel injection, using the latest Ducati diagnostic software to read any faults. Most of these bikes are now bought second-hand, and RPM will look one over for you before you buy.
