Ducati 900SS and 750SS servicing
1991 to 2002 · 904cc and 748cc air-cooled two-valve Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati 900SS and 750SS, from the 1991 carburettor bikes to the last fuel-injected i.e. models of 2002, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. These belt-driven, air-cooled twins are classics now, and RPM looks after the belt changes, valve shimming and the age-related electrical and fuelling faults they are known for.
About the 900SS and 750SS
The 1991 900SS was a thorough rework of the earlier 900 Supersport: the Weber carburettor gave way to twin 38mm Mikunis and the steel trellis frame was revised and strengthened. Its 904cc two-valve Desmo engine is air-cooled with a dry clutch, while the 750SS used a 748cc version with a wet clutch and, at launch, a single front disc. Full and half-faired (CR) versions were sold, alongside the Superlight from 1992 to 1996 and the 800-unit Final Edition of 1998, the last carburettor SS. In 1998 Pierre Terblanche's restyled SS i.e. arrived with Marelli fuel injection, and the 900 and 750 stayed in that form, including cheaper matt black Sport versions, until 2002.
Servicing your 900SS or 750SS
Both engines drive their camshafts with toothed belts, which Bennetts' buying guides say should be renewed every two years or 12,000 miles, with valve clearances checked every 6,000 miles. Pre-1998 engines have a history of snapped cylinder head studs, so it is worth knowing whether yours have been replaced. On the i.e. bikes, misfires often trace back to green corrosion on the throttle position sensor, and the fuel filter inside the tank and the relays under it are worth checking. A squeak when you press the starter can point to a worn sprag clutch, and the 900's dry clutch can grab when hot. Ray Petty and his team ring you with what they find before doing anything beyond the agreed work.
