Ray Petty Meccanica, an independent Ducati specialist in Greenwich, London, services and repairs the Ducati ST2 sport tourer built from 1997 to 2003. Many ST2s have big mileages and patchy histories, so RPM starts with the cam belts and valve clearances and works through the rest of the bike from there.

About the ST2

The ST2 launched Ducati's ST sport touring range in 1997, with the number giving the valves per cylinder. Its 944cc two-valve Desmo V-twin grew from the Paso 907 i.e. engine and, unlike the air-cooled two-valve engine in the 900SS, it is liquid-cooled, with Weber-Marelli fuel injection, one injector and one spark plug per cylinder, and a six-speed gearbox. It sits in a tubular steel trellis frame, and its fairing, bodywork and cycle parts were carried over to the ST4, ST4S and ST3 that followed. The ST2 went on sale in Europe in 1997 and in the US a year later, and the three-valve ST3 replaced it for 2004.

Servicing your ST2

The ST2's camshafts run on toothed belts, which have to be renewed on age as well as mileage, and Motorrad warns that a belt that breaks can wreck the engine, so a bike with no record of recent belt changes should have them done first. The Desmo service checks the opening and closing clearance on each of the four valves at the intervals Ducati sets for the ST2, and RPM will tell you when yours is next due. As a liquid-cooled engine, it also has coolant and hoses to look after. Motorrad notes that cheaper ST2s have often covered 40,000 km or more, so the history matters. RPM uses genuine Ducati and OEM parts on every job.
