Ducati 1299 Panigale servicing

2015 to 2018 · 1,285cc Superquadro 90° V-twin · Greenwich, London

Fuel cap and red tank of a Ducati superbike

Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati 1299 Panigale (2015 to 2018, including the S, Superleggera, R Final Edition and the 1,198cc Panigale R) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. This was the first Panigale with a lean-sensitive IMU, so a proper service here means reading the electronics as well as checking the valves.

About the 1299 Panigale

The 1299 Panigale took over from the 1199 for 2015. Ducati bored the Superquadro out to 116mm, keeping the 60.8mm stroke, for 1,285cc, with four Desmodromic valves per cylinder and cams still driven by chain and gears. It brought an inertial measurement unit to the Panigale, feeding cornering ABS, wheelie control and a quickshifter that worked on downshifts as well as upshifts. The base bike had a Marzocchi fork and Sachs shock; the S had Öhlins Smart EC semi-active suspension. Specials followed: the S Anniversario (2016, 500 built), the Superleggera (500 built) with a carbon fibre monocoque, and the R Final Edition with Superleggera engine internals and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust. Alongside it, the Panigale R kept 1,198cc for World Superbike rules.

Servicing your 1299 Panigale

The schedule for the 1299 is a service every 7,500 miles (12,000 km), with the valve clearance check every 15,000 miles (24,000 km), unchanged from the 1199. There are no belts: the Superquadro uses a chain to drive a gear on each cylinder head, which turns the camshafts. On the S, the semi-active Öhlins and its sensors are part of the check, and the IMU, cornering ABS, wheelie control and quickshifter all need the latest Ducati diagnostic software to read and reset properly. The Panigale R and the R Final Edition have titanium valves and conrods, and for those we fit genuine Ducati parts. Any work beyond the agreed service, we call you about first.
