Ducati 1199 Panigale servicing

2012 to 2014 · 1,198cc Superquadro 90° V-twin · Greenwich, London

Billet top yoke and red tank of a Ducati superbike

Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati 1199 Panigale (2012 to 2014, from the base bike through the S and Tricolore to the R and Superleggera) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 1199 was the first Ducati with the Superquadro engine and the frameless monocoque chassis, and its servicing differs from the belt-driven superbikes that came before it.

About the 1199 Panigale

Ducati launched the 1199 Panigale for 2012 to replace the 1198. It introduced the Superquadro engine: a 1,198cc liquid-cooled 90° V-twin with a 112mm bore, a short 60.8mm stroke, four Desmodromic valves per cylinder and cams driven by chains and gears instead of toothed belts. A wet slipper clutch replaced the dry clutch of earlier superbikes. The engine is a stressed member, and a small aluminium monocoque that doubles as the airbox takes the place of the trellis frame. The S added Öhlins suspension with electronic damping adjustment (DES) and forged wheels. The Tricolore added a titanium exhaust and standard ABS. The 2013 R had titanium conrods, and the 2014 Superleggera, limited to 500 bikes, used a magnesium monocoque.

Servicing your 1199 Panigale

Bennetts gives the 1199 a service every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or yearly, with the valve clearance check due at 15,000 miles (24,000 km). There are no cam belts to replace, so the Desmo service centres on measuring and shimming the clearances. The same guide lists the weak points to watch: the rear eccentric hub adjuster, which can seize and should be stripped and regreased at around 15,000 miles; air drawn into the clutch hydraulics, which makes neutral hard to find; and dashboards and switchgear that don't like a pressure washer. On an S, the electronic suspension and riding modes are read with the latest Ducati diagnostic software before we call you to agree any extra work.
