Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs every Ducati 1198, from the base bike and 1198 S to the SP and the Corse Special Editions (2009 to 2011), at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 1198 S was the first mass-produced Ducati with traction control, so as well as the engine, RPM looks after the sensors and electronics that come with it.

About the 1198

The 1198 replaced the 1098 for 2009 and was Ducati's last superbike before the 1199 Panigale. It took the 1098 R's 106 x 67.9mm bore and stroke for a 1,198cc Testastretta Evoluzione V-twin, liquid-cooled with four desmodromic valves per cylinder and a hydraulically operated dry clutch. The 1198 S added Öhlins suspension, the DDA data logger and eight-level Ducati Traction Control, which compares front and rear wheel speeds. For 2010 Ducati built Corse Special Editions of the S and of the single-seat 1198 R, with aluminium fuel tanks and Ducati Corse colours; the R Corse also had an Öhlins TTXR shock. For 2011 the 1198 SP replaced the S, adding the DQS quickshifter and a slipper clutch.

Servicing your 1198

BikeSocial gives a Desmo valve clearance check every 7,500 miles and cam belts every five years or 15,000 miles, an interval Ducati extended after the bike was launched. The S, SP and Corse models carry more to look after: wheel-speed sensors for the traction control, the data logger and, on the SP, the quickshifter, all of which RPM checks with the latest Ducati diagnostic software. Other documented faults are a starter sprag clutch that suffers if the battery is allowed to run down, a flickering dash that points to a failing regulator/rectifier, rust on the semi-floating disc carriers causing brake judder, and Öhlins fork seals that leak more often than the Showa ones. RPM calls you before doing anything outside the agreed job.
