Ducati ST4 and ST4S servicing
1999 to 2005 · 916cc and 996cc liquid-cooled Desmoquattro V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati ST4, ST4S and ST4S ABS, built from 1999 to 2005, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. These are superbike-engined tourers with four-valve heads and belt-driven cams, and RPM carries out the full Desmo service and belt work they need.
About the ST4 and ST4S
The ST4 arrived in 1999 as the four-valve version of Ducati's sport tourer, putting a retuned 916cc Desmoquattro engine from the 916 superbike into the ST2's trellis frame and bodywork. The ST4S was launched in 2001 and sold from 2002 with the 996cc engine from the 996, lifting claimed power from 105bhp to 117bhp, plus a titanium nitride coated Showa fork, an Öhlins shock and an aluminium swingarm. Its engine is the 996 Desmoquattro, not the later short-stroke Testastretta. ABS became available on the ST4S from 2003, sold as the ST4S ABS. The ST4 was dropped in 2003, and the ST4S stayed on as the top of the range until 2005, alongside the ST3.
Servicing your ST4 or ST4S
Both engines are belt-driven Desmoquattros, so a Desmo service covers eight valves, each with an opening and a closing clearance, and the cam belts are renewed by age as well as mileage. Ducati's schedule for the ST4 and ST4S sets those intervals; RPM checks your bike's history and tells you which are due. A missing record of belt changes is the main thing to watch for on a used one. The ST4 and earlier ST4S use a dry clutch, while the 2005 ST4S changed to a wet one, so the clutch work differs between years. Ray Petty and his team phone you before doing any work that wasn't agreed when you dropped the bike off.
