Ducati 750 Sport (1988) and 900 Supersport servicing
1988 to 1990 · 748cc and 904cc belt-drive Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services, repairs and restores the 1988 to 1990 Ducati 750 Sport and the 900 Supersport of 1989 to 1990 at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. Both bikes are fed by a single twin-choke Weber carburettor carried over from the Paso, and RPM sets that up alongside the cam belt and Desmo valve work.
About the 750 Sport and 900 Supersport
Under Cagiva, Ducati revived the Sport name for 1988 with a road bike priced below the Paso. It put the Paso's 748cc engine into a lightly modified 750 F1 chrome-moly trellis frame. The engine is air and oil-cooled, with belt-driven cams and Desmodromic valves, and drives through a five-speed gearbox and a dry multi-plate clutch. It had the Paso's 16-inch wheels and radial tyres, and an aluminium swingarm. For 1989 Ducati put a 904cc engine, developed from the Paso 906 unit but with oil-cooled cylinders and air-cooled heads, into the same frame with a strengthened steering head. This 900 Supersport had six speeds and 17-inch wheels. The redesigned 900SS took over for 1991.
Servicing your 750 Sport or 900 Supersport
The 750 Sport's Weber 44 DCNF twin-choke came from the Paso and was revised to cure the Paso's stumble, though Cycle World's test of the 1990 model still found a hesitation when the throttle was reopened at low revs. RPM cleans, jets and sets up the carburettor to suit the bike. Both engines have a toothed cam belt for each cylinder, renewed by age, and Desmo clearances set with shims. Ignition on the 1990 750 Sport and on the 900 is Marelli electronic. The dry clutch can judder when pulling away, and cracked swingarms are recorded on the early Sport, so the swingarm is worth checking at every service. RPM works through each bike from one end to the other and calls you to agree anything extra before doing it.
