Ducati Paso servicing
1986 to 1992 · 748cc and 904cc belt-drive Desmo V-twins · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services, repairs and restores the Ducati Paso 750, Paso 906 and 907 i.e. (1986 to 1992) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The 750 and 906 run a single Weber twin-choke carburettor, the source of most of the Paso's running problems, while the 907 i.e. has Weber-Marelli fuel injection, and RPM looks after either system as well as the belts and Desmo valves.
About the Paso
Designed by Massimo Tamburini and named after the racer Renzo Pasolini, the Paso was the first major new Ducati of the Cagiva era. A close-fitting full fairing covers a 748cc air and oil-cooled Desmo V-twin with the rear cylinder head turned round so one carburettor fits between the cylinders. The frame is built from square-section chrome-moly tubing, with an aluminium swingarm and 16-inch wheels. Ducati built 4,863 Paso 750s from 1986 to 1988. The 906 of 1988 to 1989 had a liquid-cooled 904cc engine and a six-speed gearbox, and 1,802 were made. The 907 i.e., launched for 1991, swapped the carburettor for electronic fuel injection and moved to 17-inch wheels; 2,303 were built before production ended in 1992.
Servicing your Paso
On the 750 and 906, the Weber 44 DCNF sits between the cylinders under the bodywork, where it can overheat in traffic and cause erratic running or stalling. Many owners have since converted to twin Dell'Orto carburettors, and RPM can set up either arrangement. On the 907 i.e. one Weber-Marelli unit runs both the injection and the ignition, so faults are traced with diagnostics rather than jets. All three have a toothed belt for each cylinder and Desmo clearances set with shims, and the 906 and 907 add a cooling system to maintain. The dry clutch is hydraulically operated. The fairing is held on by rubber well-nuts that tear with age, and RPM sources those small parts along with the bigger ones an old Paso needs.
