Ducati 750 Super Sport (1974) servicing
1974 · 748cc bevel-drive 90° V-twin, Desmo · Greenwich, London
Ray Petty Meccanica services, repairs and restores the 1974 Ducati 750 Super Sport, the round-case "green frame" Desmo, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. RPM restored the 1974 750SS that won Best in Class at the 2020 Salon Privé Concours d'Elegance, where the judges commented on its originality.
About the 750 Super Sport
The 750 Super Sport was Ducati's road-going replica of the Desmo 750s that Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari rode to first and second at the Imola 200 in April 1972. It was shown in 1973 and a handful were made from 750 Sports that year, but series production began in January 1974 and all 401 were built that year, most going to the US, then Australia and the UK. It kept the round-case 748cc engine and added Desmodromic heads, 40mm Dell'Orto PHM carburettors, a green-painted frame, a half fairing and a fibreglass tank with a clear strip that shows the fuel level. It remains the only round-case production twin with Desmo valves; the square-case 750 and 900SS took over for 1975.
Servicing your 750 Super Sport
Each valve has one rocker to open it and another to pull it shut, so a Desmo service means checking and setting both clearances, a slower job than on the spring-valve GT and Sport. The bevel drive and wet multiplate clutch follow the other round-case twins. Electrics are 12-volt with coil and contact breaker points, the 40mm pumper carburettors need careful balancing, and the brakes are Scarab twin-piston calipers on two front discs and one rear. Original fibreglass tanks and modern fuel do not mix well. The class-winning bike had a six-month restoration with a top-end rebuild and hard-to-find parts, then more than 100 hours of detailing: read the Salon Privé story.
