Ducati MH900e servicing

2001 to 2002 · 904cc air-cooled Desmodue V-twin · Greenwich, London

Silver trellis frame and carbon fibre bodywork on a Ducati

Ray Petty Meccanica services and repairs the Ducati MH900e, the Mike Hailwood Evoluzione built in 2001 and 2002, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. Under the special bodywork it runs the two-valve, belt-driven engine from the 900SS, so the routine belt and valve work follows the 900SS even though much of the rest of the bike is unique.

About the MH900e

The MH900e was Pierre Terblanche's tribute to the Ducati that Mike Hailwood rode to win the 1978 Isle of Man TT. Shown as a concept at Intermot in 1998, it was the first motorcycle a major manufacturer offered for sale directly over the internet: orders opened on 1 January 2000, and 2,000 individually numbered bikes were hand-built in Bologna through 2001 and 2002. The engine is the 900SS's 904cc air-cooled, two-valve Desmodue V-twin with Marelli fuel injection and belt-driven overhead cams. It sits in a tubular steel frame with a single-sided swingarm, a cantilever Paioli rear shock with no linkage, Marchesini wheels, twin exhausts exiting under the seat and an 8.5 litre fuel tank.

Servicing your MH900e

Mechanically the MH900e is a 900SS, so it takes the same two-valve Desmo service, with opening and closing clearances set on each valve, and its cam belts are replaced on age as well as mileage. That matters on a bike that may cover very few miles a year, because belts age whether or not the bike is ridden. Much of the chassis is specific to the model, including its own pattern of Marchesini wheels, the cantilever Paioli shock, the bodywork and the small plastic tank, and RPM uses genuine Ducati and OEM parts wherever they are needed. If an MH900e has been stored for a long time, RPM goes over the whole bike and phones you to agree whatever it needs before starting.
