Yellow and black 1975 Ducati 750 Sport on a lift in the RPM workshop

Ray Petty Meccanica services, repairs and restores the Ducati 750 Sport (1972 to 1974) at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. The Sport runs the GT's spring-valve engine in a sharper state of tune, and RPM looks after everything from its 32mm Dell'Ortos and points ignition to an early fibreglass tank.

About the 750 Sport

The 750 Sport turned the 750 GT into a café racer, with clip-on bars, rearsets, a longer and narrower tank and a single seat with a bum-stop cowl. Higher-compression pistons and 32mm Dell'Orto carburettors gave it about five horsepower more than the GT. Production began in September 1972, with Ian Falloon estimating only about 50 built that year, and ended in July 1974, although many bikes were registered as 1975 models. Early Sports had fibreglass tanks and black engine side covers, the frame got a narrower rear section for 1973, and late bikes had Ceriani centre-axle forks and a Brembo front disc in place of the earlier Scarab caliper. RPM's gallery shows a yellow and black 1975 750 Sport in the workshop.

Servicing your 750 Sport

Like the GT, the Sport closes its valves with springs, so there are no Desmo closing rockers to set, but its valve clearances are set with shims and a good stock of sizes saves time. The twin 32mm Dell'Ortos need balancing, ignition is by contact breaker points, and starting is by kick, with the gear lever on the right in a one-up, four-down pattern. If your Sport still wears its original 1970s fibreglass tank, be aware that today's fuel attacks that material and sealing one successfully is difficult. RPM keeps original parts wherever they can be saved and sources the ones that can't, so the bike stays true to how it left Bologna.
