Ducati Supermono servicing

1993 to 1995 · 549cc and 572cc liquid-cooled four-valve Desmo single · Greenwich, London

Red Ducati fairing and tools on the bench

Ray Petty Meccanica services, rebuilds and restores the Ducati Supermono, the 549cc and later 572cc racing single built from 1993 to 1995, at its independent Ducati workshop in Greenwich, London. Only 65 to 67 were made, so RPM treats each one as a race engine and a collector's piece at once, sourcing scarce parts and keeping it correct.

About the Supermono

Built from 1993 to 1995 for the European Supermono racing series, the bike was shown at the Cologne show in 1992. Massimo Bordi's engine started as an 888 V-twin with the rear cylinder removed: 549cc from a 100 x 70mm bore and stroke, with four-valve Desmo heads, belt-driven double overhead cams, liquid cooling and Weber-Marelli injection. To balance it, Bordi used the doppia bielletta, a second connecting rod driving a lever that pivots on a pin in the crankcase, which gives the balance of a 90° V-twin without balance shafts. Claudio Domenicali designed the chassis and Pierre Terblanche styled it. A later version, the 102, had a 102mm bore and 572cc. A road version was promised but never built, and Robert Holden won the 1995 Singles TT on one.

Servicing your Supermono

Although it shares its belt-driven, four-valve Desmo head design with Ducati's superbike twins of the time, the Supermono has its own internals: plain main bearings unlike the 888, a water pump driven from the exhaust camshaft, an oil cooler in the base of the fairing, a dry clutch and a six-speed gearbox. The valve clearances are set with opening and closing shims, as on any Desmo Ducati, and the doppia bielletta linkage is part of any bottom-end rebuild. Much of the bike is magnesium or carbon fibre, from the crankcase covers and top yoke to the Marchesini wheels and bodywork. Whether yours has stood on display for years or still races, RPM can recommission, rebuild or restore it, agreeing each step with you first.
